The iPad for games – will sales be in the millions or billions?

Games controller on the iPadApple and its iTunes has moved into number one position in the sales of digital music downloads. As a music retailer Apple has now overtaken the previous leader, Walmart.

In total in 2009 the global value of digital revenues was $4.2 billion. Yet even that enormous number is small compared to the revenues from games.

In 2009 just one games company – EA (Electronic Arts) – also achieved sales of $4.2 billion. The revenue potentials are significant for any company or device that gains favor with consumers of music or games.

For example Gameloft have 60 games on the Apple Apps Store and they have been downloaded over 55 million times so far.

The launch of the iPad has been welcomed by many games companies. Nova has already created new options for multi-finger controls via the touchpad on the iPad and promise many more developments for the new device.

We expect the iPad to sell millions yet the more significant numbers may start to accumulate over the next two years as millions of games are sold for the new device, with potential revenue in the billions.

250 million iPods sold – will iPad be the next Apple millionaire

iPad home pageThere has been a tremendous amount of interest in the Apple iPad and the great news is 83% of comments on social media are ranked as positive towards the new device.

Apple has an astonishing track record as a computer company. The Apple Mac has always been the workstation of choice in the design, publishing and even the broadcast industries. Meanwhile a good case could be made for Pixar “borrowing” the passion and productivity excellence that typifies Apple.

Any new device from Apple is a combination of hardware and software. The Rolls Royce of hardware is so very often married to the Picasso of software, not least in the long history of the relationship with Adobe.

The iPad already looks brilliant, even before release. The iPod has sold 250 million units and iTunes has sold 8.5 billion songs. In other words, Apple is the number one digital music retailer in the world.

We expect the iPad to sell in the millions as well. And we also expect the iPad will sell billions of … whatever Apple decides to support next. Stay iTuned!

4-book Twilight Saga may become 5-movie series

Just as the Twilight Saga books have become more complex – and longer – so the production company looking after the movies is considering how to adapt Breaking Dawn for the big screen.

Twilight Edward and BellaThe three-part structure of the final novel offers a number of approaches and I’m sure many fans would prefer two – or even more – movies. There are many who were happy that New Moon covered what it could, yet felt more depth was needed. The thought of squeezing Breaking Dawn into one movie leaves those fans with reservations.

Twilight JacobSummit Entertainment have said the three main stars are already signed for Breaking Dawn although the script is still being prepared. Early indications are that two movies could be necessary – if that proves “organic”.

While Twilight deals in the main with the relationship between Edward and Bella (photo 1), by the  end of New Moon we know there is an equally significant relationship with Jacob (photo 2) and his family that will occupy the storyline. This is covered in far more depth in the book than in the movie, but we can safely assume upwards of 90% of movie-goers will have read the books – and will fill in the blanks themselves.

Multi-layered

Twilight VampiresThere is a sense that author Stephenie Meyer had decided to stretch herself and her readers when we reach Eclipse and it will be fascinating to see how the movie is handled. While all the books can be read a teen-oriented, there are many thought-provoking issues that could occupy adults as well.

Twilight VolturiThe various vampire families (photo 3) are explained more in Eclipse, while the deeper currents running through Bella’s emotions start to take on a combination of adult and sociological waves. While the choice between Edward and Jacob is difficult, Bella’s abilities have longer-term ramifications for all the vampire tribes.

But back at Summit, the potential showdown with the Volturi (photo 4) suggested in the earlier books has a much larger cast in Breaking Dawn. Plus the complexity of how to deal with Renesmee and her rapid growth.

Here’s hoping we get at least 5 movies. Plus a TV series or two. Oh, and maybe a prequel. Or is that just me hooking into the dollar chase?!?!

American Idol decline continues – Simon Cowell at fault?

In what many see as a problem caused by Simon Cowell, the numbers for American Idol are down, down, down. Just as the 9th season is about to begin, the results from the past two years reveal a dramatic decline in both the popularity and the profitability of the show.

Simon Cowell has been unending in his anti-girl remarks and attitude over the past 15 months following the break-up of his own longterm relationship. He verbally attacks and derides the female judges and most of the girl contestants.

Audiences for the Fox show have fallen by 4.5 million over the past two years. Advertising sales for American Idol have also been hit, by $45 million in just one year according to TNS Media Intelligence.

In the long run, however, Cowell’s anti-girl stance is going to damage American Idol even more. The girls, winners and finalists, are between 4 times and 10 times more successful than the guys. Simon is likely to lose hundreds of millions of dollars of potential earnings for the producers and affiliates of the show by his anti-girl tirades and nastiness.

American Idol success chart

American Idol success chart

The anti-girl bias by Simon is definitely a personal hangup rather than anything to do with talent. The public have lodged many complaints about apparent voting problems, many relating to the girl contestants.

Simon may not need the money, but I bet Freemantle and Fox (and all the others) definitely do. Reckon that’s why we’re hearing all the rumors about Cowell departing the show. Is he jumping or being pushed?

Top 10 Online Music Sites – Update to December 2009

What a year for music, especially the online streaming and digital download sites. There have been large gains in users and listeners for some sites, and disastrous drops for others.

So while Apple has topped the charts in all sorts of ways plus buying Lala to sit alongside iTunes, much of the online universe has suffered setbacks:

  • Project Playlist (playlist.com) loses over 30 million users
  • imeem loses 9 million users
  • MySpace loses 4 million users

But that is not the full story. Playlist provided services for MySpace, then MySpace bought imeem and shut it down. The result:

  • MySpace in effect loses around 40 million listening units!

On the plus side, Pandora had picked up 7.5 million visits per month in the year to November 2009, and doubled users to reach 40 million by December.

The largest gains in percentage points were Grooveshark (+614%) and Lala (+380%), while Last.FM grabbed millions more users.

Bo Bruce is in the studio – one year on from Orange Unsigned

Bo Bruce was an unlucky contestant on Orange Unsigned. As far as we were concerned, the judges were rather biased, being somewhat anti-girl and pro-indie-group. Fortunately for music lovers, Bo didn’t take the setback too hard.

Bo recently announced: “So, since Unsigned I’ve been deep in the studio and come out with much bigger portfolio of work. Really wanted to stay underground for a bit until I had found my sound – am now working with a really talented producer in Brighton where I’m recording the EP set for a spring release.”

In the meantime, Bo has released a few mixes to keep us interested. The first is Fighting Arizona Mix 3 and some of the comments from Unsigned still hold true. Bo has a similar style/feel to Dido yet also, for more current listeners, Florence & The Machine is another reference point. Which, for us, is all good:

Next up is Brighter Moon and here is a richer tone to Bo, capturing the huskiness and colour of her expressive voice. My guess is the ears of the Unsigned judges were so contaminated by their indie preferences they couldn’t hear the qualities in Bo’s voice and style:

No, this is not a rave against Jo Wiley or Lauren or even Simon, but another opinion from a different set of ears. Those judges have their preferences which they could not seem to leave behind at the door. So here’s hoping others will accept and love Bo’s style.

Finally, for now, is Black Ice, a more instrumental-led song, Bo’s voice meshing with the melody and then creating the contrasts:

Bo is a songwriter and vocalist with a sound and approach that’s worth a listen. Whether you imagine female singer-songwriters are not your style, give Bo Bruce a listen. She’s worth 3 minutes of your time, and then maybe more.
